Trey Ratcliff Back in Australia

This time Trey headed to Melbourne

Last time Trey was here he held a photowalk in Sydney, there was a great turn up and it was great to meet Trey and have a chat with him. About a week ago he announced that he would fly into Sydney then drive to Melbourne for a photowalk, the photowalk was held last night and from what I can see from the images he had a great turn out there too! You can check out the images from his photowalk on G+ HERE.

Today’s iCandy – 541am

Last year I spent a lot of time on the northern beaches of Sydney, for 2013 I thought I would head to the eastern suburbs more often. This is my first visit to the Eastern Suburbs and I decided to head to Coogee. This is Coogee Baths, and it was forecast to be a real scorcher in Sydney with temp’s reaching 43c, it was no surprise that by 6am the beach was starting to fill up… anyway, this is one I took of the baths at 541am (according to the clock on the Surf Club…

Ken Duncan, one of the many great photographers that inspire me has created this video, Merry Xmas!

Today’s iCandy – Opera Crystal

I took this back when Trey Ratcliff was in Sydney. He ran a photowalk here and whilst the weather looked gloomy, clouds always add something to an image. All you have to do is enter the code ‘ON3LEGS’ when you check out of the HDRsoft shopping cart and you automatically get the discount! Picking your next lens

A commonly asked question

50mmOne of the most common questions I have been asked is “what lens should I get next?”, and there is no easy answer… it’s funny how once I had a couple of lenses people think I can answer these questions… why do you think I have all the lenses I possibly can get my hands on… because even I am never sure what lens I will use next, so it’s best just to have them all! With Christmas just around the corner maybe it’s time to treat yourself… you can check out my PAGE HERE where I show you my kit and over you some advice on choosing your next lens, Merry Christmas!

Free Facebook Cover Images

Just a reminder if you head over to my Facebook Page you will find an album I am slowly filling up with Facebook covers you can use (I try to add a new one each day). I pick one of my favourite quotes and put it on one of my images, then format it to fit the Facebook cover so all you have to do is right click the image and save it to your computer, then you can upload it as your cover image.

Today’s iCandy – Bird Cage Alley

I took this one after the last on3legs photowalk in 2012. Myself and Rob Potter from Photography Hot Spots were wandering back to the car, and I guess, being the photographers we are, we always see photo opportunities… I had noticed that Rob had stopped about 20 metres behind me, and he was staring down an alley with an excited grin on his face… of course, I had to go back and see what it was…

You can do HDR

Photomatix Tutorial

I get asked about how I go about creating a HDR image. And whilst there are a lot of options when it comes to software, I have tried a few and can’t find anything better then Photomatix. I created a couple of videos, one is showing you how, when I am on location, I capture the bracketed shots with my camera, then, in the second video, I show you a screen capture of exactly what I do with photomatix to create the HDR image on my computer.

HERE is the link to the videos

Today’s iCandy – Stairs to Nowhere

On the recent photowalk we came across these stairs, there were sever sets of them in this building, and some were really nicely restored, whilst most were neglected and had a lot of character…

Another successful Photowalk

Observatory Hill to The Rocks

I started to worry about the weather towards the start of the walk, it was overcast and there definitely wasn’t going to be a sunset… just grey! I do like clouds in my photo’s as it adds drama to the shot.

We had a good turnout (I never did count the total numbers) but let’s call it 20+… we Kicked off at Observatory Hill, a purely magnificent location for photography, evident by the amount of wedding photo’s being taken up on this hill! We then slowly wandered down to the Harbour Bridge and finished at the Harbour Forecourt.

As always, plenty of friendly people attended of all skill level and it was great to see some familiar faces from previous walks.

today’s iCandy – NightBridge

I took this towards the end of the walk. If you have been following me for a while you will know this is the composition of my award winning ‘Sunkissed Bridge’ shot… I thought it would be nice at night too!

10 Tips to Better Photos

Brand New eBook Launched

I am pleased at the response in the first 12 hours of this being launched. I announced it last night on my Facebook page and there has been dozens of downloads. It is nice to know that after many hours of compiling my tips and tricks that a lot of you are keen to take a look inside!

Taking better photo’s starts with you making the decision that you need to learn something new… as the old saying goes “doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity”. I decided to write this eBook hoping I would help you understand how to take creative control over your camera. The camera is a marvellous tool and used properly, you can create images that will not only impress your friends and family, but even you will sit back and stare at your photo’s in awe!

I see so many people that leave their camera on auto, and in some cases, that is just fine, but if you are wondering why you’re not getting the results you want then this eBook could definitely be for you!

My journey in photography has been one of a stop start nature, sometimes it is easy to make excuses and let ‘life’ get in the way. I decided to just ‘capture life’ and stop making excuses and rarely a day passes where I don’t take a photograph. At the very minimum I will post one on my blog and other social media pages every day.

In this modern day it is as easy as it ever has been to take and share your photo’s with the rest of the world, you probably carry a camera with you every day cleverly integrated into your mobile phone.

It’s now time for you to take creative control over your camera… Enjoy the journey!

Final PhotoWALK for 2012

The final photowalk for 2012 has over 50 photographers registered with over 30 confirmed. The last photowalk was a great success and I am hoping this one will be just as good, if not better! The photowalk is this Sunday Evening kicking off at one of Sydney’s premier photo locations,  Observatory Hill. We will end up in The Rocks once the sun has set and there is a good chance there will be a cold beverage or two enjoyed at this time!

If you’re keen to find out more or come along, visit the Facebook Event Page and register your interest… I hope to see you there!

today’s iCandy – Turimetta Star

If you have been following me for a little while you will know that my favourite sunrise location on Sydney’s Northern Beaches is Turimetta Beach. I get a lot of questions to the exact location of this beach, it is basically North Narrabeen. On the southern end of the beach there are some wonderful rock structures that create all sorts of interesting foreground to shoot… enjoy!

Another Successful Photowalk

Nature turned on her charm!

The weather looked average at best mid afternoon and I was getting messages through Facebook and Google+ asking me if the walk will still be on, what if it is raining?, people were generally worried this would be a wash out. I was turning up rain, hail or shine, I had been organizing this photowalk for weeks with Rob Potter from photography hot spots and I was not going to miss it! We had planned this exact date due to low tide and sunset converging… Long Reef is a fantastic spot at any time, but get there at low tide and the place just comes to life! There are photogenic rocks and rock pools everywhere!

We had over 20 people turn up for the walk and as always I am was humbled by how many of you want to come out take photo’s with me… it was great to see such a mix of experience, and to see the more experienced helping out the rookies… it was really nice to see some  familiar faces too coming back after my first photowalk in September.

My plan is to squeeze another photowalk in before Christmas, not sure when, and not sure where, but I am keen to make it a walk that finishes with a Christmas dinner and a few drinks for those that would like to stick around and chew the fat!

Capturing the Sunset at Long Reef

Group Shot of the Attendees… a couple had wandered off… but most are in this shot!

Orange Blossom

I actually didn’t take too many photo’s on the walk, I was answering a few questions and helping a couple of people out with settings so they could capture the sunset. I found this one rock that ended up being the star of my show! I would have liked to have walked to the far eastern end of the reef and shoot back over the headland but I didn’t wear my good boots and wasn’t keen on getting my joggers soaked… I will head back next time low tide and sunset meet to see what else I can capture!
