Hot, Hot, Hot

Summer is here!

Today is the first day of summer in Australia, Yesterday in Sydney where I live was 40 degrees Celsius… and today is supposed to be hotter! I must admit though, I prefer hot over cold… I remember visiting Calgary in Canada once and it was minus 18c… too cold for me!

today’s iCandy – on the beach

Thankfully there are a crew of people that work on beaches across the world that are passionate about saving lives… if you’re heading to the beach today stay safe!

Toe the Line

Why do we say what we say?

Sometimes I will hear a saying and wonder “where did that come from?”, for example, the rule of thumb apparently originated back in time when it was okay to beat your wife, as long as what you hit her with was smaller in thickness than your thumb… there is another theory that beer brewers would use their thumb to test the temperature of the beer during the brewing process. I am sure you would have heard the saying “toe the line”, that when I recently went on a tour of the Fremantle Prison I found out that this was what was said to get the prisoners to stand with their toe’s on the line so they could be prepared to go into their prison cells.

the daily pic – Toe the line

In the image below you can clearly see the lines that prisoners were ordered to stand along as they were prepared to go through to their cells.

the good ole days

Best beginner DSLR

I get asked this question alot… what is the best camera to kick off with? Well, just about every manufacturer makes a camera that is perfect for the beginner. Before you blow your hard earned on something that may become a paper weight, I have a few tips.

1.If you have a friend or family member that has a DSLR, get the same brand as they have. Firstly, they can shortcut the manual for you and secondly, you can share lenses.

2. Think about what you want to take photo’s of… some cameras are better suited to sport, some to landscape… same with lenses, they all have their strengths, and weaknesses.

3. Buy second hand, there are plenty of bargains to be had on eBay… you will save $$$$.

the daily pic – The good ole days

The Fremantle Roundhouse opened in January of 1831. It was built as a Gaol and eventually was used just as a holding cell/police lock up until the late 1800’s, then it became accommodation for the water police. If you caught yesterday’s post I explained that using photoshop was quite normal in the digital age. Here you can see I have used it to give my shot the look of an old film camera… sorry Mr Nikon, I know you have spent many man hours and many hundreds of thousands of dollars getting your cameras to produce amazing detail and colour… but I felt I wanted to get the look of the good ole days!

Cell A24

Only 2 facebook ‘Likes’ to go!

We only need 2 more likes to go and I will be giving away two 12″ x 18″ signed prints! So that means only 2 more people get the chance to win so make sure you share this with your friends and family on Facebook.

What do you have eBay to thank for?

I always scour eBay for photography bargains, and chuck silly bids on stuff I would like if I got it for the right price. I found a lens on Ebay, brand new in the box, used a couple of times, it was a wide angle lens, not something I have ever wanted, nor did I think I wanted. So I made a low ball offer… and would you know it, the seller accepted it! I thought to myself, I will just re-list it and make a couple of hundred bucks.

When I received it I had to try it out first… you know, before I re-listed it on eBay… it only took a couple of shots for me to realise what a cracker of a lens it was… and how much fun a wide angle lens is! So you guessed it… it never got re-listed and now lives on my camera 90% of the time!

So I have eBay to thank for helping me discover photography with an UWA (Ultra Wide Angle) lens!

the daily pic – Cell A24

Here’s a pic, that without an UWA lens you wouldn’t get much detail into your shot. This is cell A24 in Fremantle Prison. The walls in this cell were painted between 1988 and 1991. Prison rules didn’t allow inmates to deface their cell walls but this prisoner was given special permission for therapeutic reasons.

Praying for Freedom

OnOne software have some freebies!

It isn’t often that you can get something for free, but onOne software are bending the rules and doing just that! Before I go any further, I do not have any affiliation with onOne nor do I get any financial reward or benefit from them for mentioning their software. I think it’s kinda cool software and if you’re into adding effects to your photos then their software is for you!

They’re not throwing the baby out with the bath water so you will still have to part with some hard earned coin if you want the full version! However, the freebies they’re giving away still have plenty of effects you can use without limitation or watermarks! So why not give them a go… http://www.ononesoftware.com/free/

the daily pic – Praying for Freedom

This is a photo I took whilst on the Fremantle Prison tour. It is the prison church, and I have used one of the free onOne textures on the walls to give it an older sort of look just to show you what is possible. I love the old piano in the corner and could only imagine some of the prayers that were made in this room! I have included a before onOne and after onOne so you can see the difference.

Here is the before onOne texture being applied…

Nikon v’s Cannon…

Happy Easter!

I trust the Easter bunny was kind to you and left you with stacks of Chocolate to enjoy! Easter to me is a little like Christmas, besides the religious significance of these two occasions, I find the opportunity to hang out with family and friends enjoyable, maybe it’s the chocolate, or the alcoholic beverages that just happen to be consumed on these days, I find everyone is pretty happy and chillaxed! So make sure you not only enjoy your day, but take the opportunity to enjoy it with family and friends…

the daily pic – Nikon v’s Cannon

The title of this daily pic might upset a few Nikon lovers, I know that if my Nikon what going head to head with the Cannon at the Roundhouse Fremantle it is likely to come off second best. This Cannon is still fired at 1pm every day, and was originally so people could keep track of time. I am sure they only use blanks now (if that’s what they call them). However… on this occasion I took at shot of this Cannon with my Nikon!

Life in the Stocks

Canon set to release another Full Frame Camera

The 5D mark III is expected to go on sale for over $4000. The new 5D only has a 22mp sensor whilst the Nikon D800 has 36mp and has a RRP almost a grand less! JB Hi Fi are said to have significantly cheaper prices than other local retailers if you’re looking at getting the Canon.

There is a rumour of Canon releasing an ‘X’ version with a 46mp sensor. We will wait and see!

the daily pic – Life in the Stocks

The stocks are a device that was used for a form of physical punishment that also involved public humiliation. The offender would be locked into the stocks and the passing public would throw everything from rotten fruit to poo at them! The offender would be locked in the stocks day and night and a lot of people would die from heat exhaustion or hypothermia.

I really like the detail in the wood of this set of stocks, these ones are located in the Fremantle Round House.

Another one off the bucket list

La Nina Gone!

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, La Nina, which has been responsible for the conditions that have contributed to flooding and heavy rainfall in Australia during the past two years have all but disappeared from the Pacific region. I know that on several occasions I have had to cancel plans due to the wet weather that La Nina had brought us, so I am happy to see the back of this weather phenomena.

the daily pic – Another one off the bucket list

Well it wasn’t much of a summer yet I did manage to tick off another thing on the bucket list, I swam in the Indian Ocean. I had been to Perth before but never had taken the time to look around. There certainly is no shortages of beaches in Perth. This pic was taken at Mullaloo Beach, about 30 minutes north of the city and as you can see, La Nina was no where to be seen! I stayed in an apartment opposite the beach and even though outside temps were in the high 20’s, the water wasn’t! It was cold… so I didn’t stay in for long.

Rivers of Gold!

Any city looks great at night, and when there is a freeway in the shot I love how it turns into a river of gold… This is a result of the long shutter speed required to capture enough light to make a picture at night. This photo required for the shutter to be open for 30 seconds, so it records the lights from the cars on the freeway for 30 seconds, and it ends up a golden colour when headlights and brake lights mix together.

I took this photo from Kings Park, and what surprised me was how busy Kings Park was at night. There were cars and people everywhere! There is a lookout that I used to get this shot, if you’re up for trying some cityscape at night and you’re in Perth… this is the spot!
